DESTINATION SANTORINI - Volcanic Wines & Pioneers of Ancient Greek Wine Culture

A dreamy volcanic island with breath-taking views of the Aegean Sea, Santorini is not only known for amassing tourists, yet it provides an ancient wine culture little known to the outside world.

Santorini is an island located in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km southeast from Greece. It is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago. The island was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: the Minoan eruption (sometimes called the Thera eruption), which occurred about 3,600 years ago.

Santorini's economy is primarily reliant on the tourism industry; however, agriculture also plays an interesting part. The island sustains a unique wine industry, based on several indigenous grape varieties. The history of wine cultivation in Santorini goes back to prehistoric times, and today vineyards of Santorini are the oldest in the country and amongst the oldest in the world.

Thanks to the island’s soil and weather conditions, the wine produced has earned a well-deserved reputation. The unique volcanic soil in Santorini can absorb plenty of water and nourishes plants very well. To protect the vines from strong northern winds, vine growers have a unique way of cultivation that has been used for thousands of years. They twist the vine so that it grows into a wreath like a large nest, where the bunches of fruit that be protected from the harsh winds.

ACHINOS strives to work with local Greek wine producers to bring the best to the Singapore market. Out of our vast selection, we have partnered with the highly reputed Karamolegos winery.

Artemis Karamolegos Winery traces its roots back to 1952. It is inextricably linked to Santorini’s volcanic vineyards and winemaking tradition. It manages its own private vineyards and cooperating producers’ vineyards in Kamari, Messaria, Exo Gonia, Pyrgos, Megalochori and Akrotiri, and also buys grapes from local producers.

2003-1

The winery produces 11 different wines in order to highlight the complexity and express the true character of this unique terroir.

The Terra Nera series is an excellent introduction to Santorini wines and is based on the two most popular varieties on the island (Assyrtiko, Mandilaria). Terra Nera White is the fruitiest and simplest version of Assyrtiko as it comes from young vines grown at a low-altitude, vinified in order to produce a more “every day” wine, with less ageing potential and complexity than the other white wines produced at the Winery.

Santorini is a blend of the three main white varieties of the island (Assyrtiko, Athiri, Aidini) and the first PDO Santorini wine in terms of annual bottle production for our Winery. It is a classic Santorini blend, through a modern, typical, and multidimensional expression.
